Mathey – Tissot

In the heart of the Swiss Jura mountains, at an altitude of 1300 meters, is the village of Les Ponts-de-Martel, nestled in one of the most beautiful valleys in Switzerland. It was there, in 1886, that the Compagnie des Montres Mathey-Tissot was founded.

Mathey-Tissot first specialized in “repeating” watches, timepieces that strike the hour and half hour. Shortly after, the company launched into the production of chronographs, made with such ingenuity and precision that they were an immediate success. Many prizes rewarding their exceptional quality have been awarded to them throughout Europe.

On the strength of this success, the company expanded in 1890, in order to be able to meet European and particularly British demand, from which large orders flowed. An order for 2,500 gold and silver repeater watches was even placed by a Scottish jeweler commissioned by a noble gentleman to supply an entire regiment. A huge order for the time!

At the 1914 Kew Observatory competition, Mathey-Tissot presented six split-seconds chronographs. All of them passed the class A rating with the mention “especially good”, one of them even having obtained a record score never reached before. Later that same year, Mathey-Tissot confirmed this achievement with the awarding of the Grand Prix at the Swiss National Exhibition in Bern. Over the years, an impressive number of other distinctions have been won by Mathey-Tissot watches.

During World War I, Mathey-Tissot was called upon to supply the United States Army Corps of Engineers with large quantities of precision chronographs, and General John J. Pershing, commander of the United States Expeditionary Forces, has chosen Mathey-Tissot as the watch to be awarded to members of its staff. During World War II, Mathey-Tissot continued to produce thousands of timepieces for the United States Armed Forces and the British Navy.

This long and solid experience allows Mathey-Tissot to still offer today, through its representatives around the world, quality watches in an extensive range, suitable both for demanding amateurs and for people wishing to buy a beautiful Swiss watch at a low price.
